Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city and the centre of music, culture and arts in Thailand.
Chiang Mai means the new city. King Meng Rai founded the city as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom 1296.
The British Consulate and the USA Consulate is located in Chiang Mai. The British had great influence here from 1880 to 1920, helping the Thai Government to set up the mail railway and transport infrastructure.
Thailand means FREE LAND. Thailand has never been colonised.
During the cold war America supported Thailand with equipment and training.
The American Vietnam War had many bases in Thailand.
Thailand is a sub tropical paradise with many rain forests rivers and lakes.
Chiang Mai is app. 11 hours by train from Bangkok or 1 hour by airplane, Chiang Mai has its own International Air port (CNX).
If you take the train from Bangkok the overnight sleeper is a good idea, they serve dinner, make up the beds and you wake up in the morning for breakfast coming into Chiang Mai.
Thailand is a safe pace to travel; I have travelled back and forth from Sweden for many years making 25 trips around the country by train or bus with out ever having any thing stolen.
